Want to join us?
When you volunteer with us in Kenya you will create not only a life changing experience for yourself but also add value to the local community and school as a whole. Our goal is to give back to the communities and provide access to quality education and a safe place for the students we support. Your time here will include working hard during the week to provide a quality level of volunteering but with plenty of time for fun in the evenings and weekends. Volunteering at the school and with the children should always be fun – and being surrounded by hundreds of our sweet students often doesn’t feel like work!
Supporting A Child in the Rough through volunteering means you can play your part in:
- Improving daily life and access to education for our students
- Provide more 1 on 1 personal support in classrooms
- Teaching or offering a special skill of your own.
- Creating meaningful relationships and memories that last a lifetime with our students and staff
- Immersing yourself in Kenya’s culture, both inside and outside the Kibera Slum, by staying in local accommodation, working with local teachers and students, sampling some Kenyan cuisine and venturing out on your own time for some of our amazing weekend excursions!

What To Expect During Your Stayand How You Make An Impact
Schools in Kenya can have classes of between 15 and 100 children at any one time and are often under-resourced and underfunded with a genuine need for support. Star of Wonder School receives no support from the government and is fully reliant on A Child in the Rough for support. We cater to approximately 300 students ranging from kindergarten to grade 8, ages 4-18. Therefore, we have a great demand for enthusiastic and engaging volunteers with a positive attitude who can keep up with the fast-paced atmosphere of the school. Having a passion for working with children and a can do attitude is what we are looking for!
If you have a special skill such as construction, farming, videography/photography, nursing, dentistry, or something you feel would be especially beneficial to our school please contact us and share more!

What To Expect As a Childcare Volunteer:
- Teaching basic English and Math
- Have a subject of expertise? Let us know and you can have the opportunity to teach it (Sports, Music, Arts, etc)
- Assisting teachers in classrooms with grading papers, assigning work, and playing learning games
- Helping with the daily tasks of running the school
- Cooking and handing out breakfasts and lunch, break time games, dancing and energetic activities during play time
- Handing out humanitarian aid, donations, and other resources (if you would like to bring donations please contact us before your trip)
