At A Child in the Rough we strive to make a lasting difference. We provide basic needs such food, water, safety and emergency medical care while giving children opportunity through free education to escape life in the slum and create a more promising future.
Transparency is one of our top priorities at A Child in the Rough. We want donors to know exactly where their contributions go by sharing photos, videos, and volunteer opportunities. Donations create amazing change and a make a lasting difference!
In the Kibera Slum there are no government funded schools which means an education is not an option. We proudly offer free education to children ages Pre-K through 8th grade.
Many children who attend school have no access to food once they leave our care, meaning we are their only source for meals. A Child in the Rough is proud to provide breakfast and lunch to each of our students so they can fully focus on their education.
In the Kibera Slum there is limited to no clean water. A Child in the Rough provides fresh drinking water to all of our students. Access to clean water also aids in sanitation and cleanliness to help stop the spread of disease.
In the Kibera Slum there are no sewer systems or proper working restrooms. We've installed several restrooms into our school to ensure cleanliness, prevention of disease, and safety from sexual assault for all of our students.
Children in the slum tragically lack access to medical care when emergencies strike. A Child in the Rough provides the necessary funds to treat medical emergencies, like Neema, our eight year old student who developed tuberculosis and a bacterial infection in her ear. The disease quickly spread to her brain causing loss of hearing, and without quick treatment, brain damage and death. We're proud to say Neema has made a full recovery.
Once students graduate from our care, we provide the funds needed to allow them to continue their education through high school graduation.
Nothing would be possible without the help of our amazing and selfless staff. The majority of our teachers are 100% volunteer, meaning they give their time at the school from 8am-5pm to then go work a full time job overnight making an average of 1$ per day. At A Child in the Rough, we are working towards being able to provide all of our teaching staff with a proper living wage.
When the pandemic hit the Star of Wonder school tragically lost everything it had ever owned and was evicted by the landlord. Thanks to donors, A Child in the Rough was able to relocate and rebuild a new school.
